Banh Mi (Vietnamese Sandwich)

 Who doesn’t love Banh Mi? Banh Mi is one of my favorite Vietnamese snacks or breakfast. I love how simple and easy it is to make this yummy dish. I can eat Banh Mi every day and never get sick of it. The flavors of the sweet and savory marinated meat with pickled veggies and fresh herbs are incredibly delicious.

Banh Mi (Vietnamese Sandwich)

INGREDIENTS

For Pickled Veggies

  • 1 cup cucumber, thin sliced

  • 3/4 cup carrot, shredded

  • 3/4 cup red radish, thin sliced

  • 2 mini bell peppers

  • 1 shallot, thin sliced

  • 1 tsp garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp ginger, minced

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 3 tbsp white vinegar

For Marinating

  • 1 lb pork or choice of meat

  • 1 tbsp palm sugar

  • 1 tbsp regular sugar

  • 1 tbsp fish sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tsp ginger, minced

  • 1 tsp garlic, minced

  • 1 green onion, minced

For Bread

  • French bread or baguette

  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 1 tsp sriracha sauce

For Garnishing

  • Fresh Cilantro

  • JalapenΜƒo, sliced

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a medium bowl, combine ingredients for the pickled vegetables. Let it rest in the refrigerator.

  • Meanwhile, marinate the pork or your choice of meat. Add the meat, palm sugar, regular white sugar, fish sauce, salt, black pepper, sesame oil, minced ginger, minced garlic, and minced green onion in a medium mixing bowl. Mix everything and marinate the meat for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Then heat the pan and add a little bit of cooking oil and the marinated meat. Grill or sear the meat for 10 minutes to cook.

  • Next, take the meat out of the pan and slice the meat.

  • Prepare the bread, slice the bread in half and take out some of the breaded meat inside the bread to create room to fill in the marinated meat and pickled veggies.

  • In a small bowl, add the mayonnaise, sriracha sauce, and hoisin sauce and mix it. Use the sauce to spread inside the bread.

  • Then toast the bread inside the oven for 2-3 minutes at 350 F. Take it out and let it cool down for 2-3 minutes.

  • Open the bread and add some marinated meat slices, pickled veggies, fresh jalapeΓ±os, and cilantro.
